PSA to printed zine makers

As a 37 year old who’s been running a sole proprietorship for the last 10+ years, I just want everyone who is planning to run a fandom project that involves accepting money for printing & shipping costs to know that you’re actually running a small business and you need to plan for taxes. It doesn’t matter if you don’t make any profit: that is business income and the IRS will see it as such if you get audited.

If you only take enough money in to cover the cost of printing & shipping then you can write that off as a business expense and probably not pay taxes on it, But in order for that to fly you actually have to do business accounting, especially if you’re doing it at scale. Like, you can probably skate by without reporting a $500 project; I absolutely would not fucking risk it with a $5000 project.

Back when I was producing shows there were years when I was where I made $20k in ticket sales only to turn around and immediately pay $18k to my performers. I only made $2k for myself, but I had to report the entire $20k, because it was ALL INCOME. (I only paid taxes on the $2000, because that’s how writing off expenses works!)

Yeah this is boring grownup shit and I’m getting my boring grownup fingers all over your fun fandom, but boring grownups doing boring grownup things are the reason fandom spaces exist at all (paying for servers is deeply boring), and I’m way more fun than an audit

VOLKSWAGEN??????? LIKE THE CAR BRAND?????

Old people, I need the fandom lore now.

i mean speaking from general knowledge of how fandom has changed- ship names used to be like this. just naming ships a word or a thing that makes sense, like Aziraphele and Crowley were known as Air Conditioning (AC)

i think this stems from a time when shipping had to be more covert and fandoms were more protective of themselves least you get haters.

this makes perfect sense to me!

i know it’s like a mafia movie cliche but think about how impractical “cement shoes” are. like that cement takes a long time to set. imagine you’re a snitch and you’re gonna sleep with the fishes but they have to get you in these things first. you’re tied up in a chair. you’ve got an enforcer putting your feet in the wet cement. he’s making sure the molds around your feet are tight and secure. he’s keeping watch on you so that you don’t run. that cement takes a long time to set. maybe you two get to talking. nothing to lose if you’re gonna die soon. maybe he’s got pretty eyes. that cement takes a long time to set. what was i talking about

Y’all in the American SW and west Mexico better check the national hurricane center and your weather for this weekend and next week.

Hurricane Hilary is about to make landfall and that whole desert area is supposed to get a years worth of rain or more. Death Valley is supposed to get twice the annual rainfall. Severe winds, massive flooding, and landslides are all strong possibilities.

This is gonna get ugly. Please spread the word. This is a majorly anomalous event and people may be unaware of the threat headed their way.

Flash floods are definitely gonna kill people, so here’s your regularly scheduled PSA:

Desert soil does not absorb a significant amount of water. It reaches maximum saturation very very quickly, and all the rest of the water rushes downhill. Even if you can’t tell that the ground is not perfectly flat, the water can. And it will move. Quickly. No, faster than that. Nope, still faster. If you try to cross moving floodwater, you will get swept downstream and probably die.

Do not try to wade in/cross flood water that is any deeper than the thickness of the sole of an average athletic shoe, no I am not kidding, the water will get deeper literally while you’re standing in it.

This goes for cars, too. I’ve seen entire vehicles getting swept downstream in flash floods because the driver thought they could cross the “puddle” and Found Out.

Stay safe, y’all.

A couple of inches of moving water is more than enough to move a car. Don’t fuck with it.
